Aston Villa’s Visit Rwanda partnership beyond money
Aston Villa’s Commercial Director, Francesco Calvo, has emphasized that the club’s new sponsorship deal with Visit Rwanda is not just about financial gain, but a long‑term journey aimed at expanding the club’s presence in Africa and promoting football development.
On July 17, 2026, Aston Villa announced Visit Rwanda as its new front‑of‑shirt sponsor for two years. Calvo revealed that securing a new partner was challenging, especially after betting companies were banned from Premier League kits. The club spent 12 months negotiating before finalizing the deal.
“We wanted a partner who could help us achieve long‑term goals, not just provide money. Visit Rwanda fits perfectly,” Calvo explained.
Calvo noted that Aston Villa aims to grow its fan base across Africa, not only in Rwanda. He described the continent as a rapidly growing market in both economic and football terms. The partnership is expected to open doors for deeper engagement with African supporters.
Beyond branding, the deal includes commitments to support football development in Rwanda, similar to Aston Villa’s initiatives in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. The club intends to nurture young talent and contribute to grassroots sports growth.
Calvo explained that Aston Villa conducted extensive research before signing, consulting other clubs already partnered with Rwanda. The findings showed Rwanda as a forward‑thinking nation using sports to promote tourism, attract investment, and inspire national pride.
“We chose Visit Rwanda because we see it as a partner that can help us build a lasting relationship,” Calvo added.
