Veteran Rwandan politician Tito Rutaremara, head of Rwanda’s Council of Elders, has weighed in on the escalating confrontation between the United States, Israel, and Iran.

In a strongly worded commentary, he argued that President Donald Trump is trapped in a “dilemma,” unable to decide whether to escalate or retreat.

Rutaremara described how Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched surprise strikes on Iran, killing senior leaders. Yet Iran quickly replaced them and retaliated with missile attacks on Israel and US bases in Arab countries. He noted that Iran’s bold move to close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil route shifted the battlefield from military to economic pressure, sparking global alarm as oil and fertilizer prices surged.

According to Rutaremara, Trump attempted to force Iran into submission by demanding it act as though defeated, but Iran refused. He explained that Trump then sought to bypass Hormuz by creating an alternative shipping route near Oman, only for Iran to strike vessels attempting passage. Each escalation, Rutaremara argued, left Trump more frustrated and the strait more firmly closed.

Rutaremara outlined two scenarios: Trump could withdraw, appearing defeated, or attempt a risky military seizure of Hormuz. He warned that Iran’s soldiers, fighting to defend their homeland, would have stronger resolve than US troops, drawing parallels to American setbacks in Vietnam and Afghanistan.

“I am not prophesying,” Rutaremara concluded, “but if the American soldier insists on fighting, he will be defeated, as has happened elsewhere.”
