In his first major interview since becoming Prime Minister, Andy Burnham told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg that he will not hesitate to disagree with U.S.

President Donald Trump whenever he believes it is in Britain’s best interest.

Burnham revealed he has already spoken with Trump, describing him as “warm,” but stressed that the UK–U.S. relationship must be guided by national interests rather than automatic alignment. He explained that leaders must adapt to changing global circumstances and that his duty is to protect Britain’s priorities first.

“I cannot say I will never differ with him. If the moment comes when it is right for the UK, I will,” Burnham said.

He also expressed concern over Trump’s decision to launch a war with Iran, making clear he would not remain silent if he felt Britain’s interests were at stake. Burnham emphasized that his government will focus on staying close to citizens and addressing the country’s needs, while maintaining a strong but independent partnership with the United States.
