From Kampala streets to the World Cup stage: Ghetto Kids dance with Shakira
Uganda’s Ghetto Kids lived their dream when they performed alongside Shakira and Burna Boy during the halftime show of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The young dancers captivated millions worldwide before Spain defeated Argentina to claim the trophy.
Ten‑year‑old Sierra described the moment as unforgettable, stressing faith, respect for parents, and education as keys to success. Eleven‑year‑old Josephine said seeing football legends Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal was her highlight. The group also praised Shakira’s kindness, noting how warmly she welcomed them.
Coach Dauda Kavuma, once a street child himself, explained that Shakira personally invited the troupe after they had danced to her hit Waka Waka on Britain’s Got Talent. He emphasized that their journey shows how talent, combined with resilience, can lift children from disadvantaged backgrounds to the world’s biggest stage.
