Rwanda pays tribute to U.S. senator Lindsey Graham

Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Olivier J.P. Nduhungirehe, has expressed condolences following the death of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, describing him as a man of truth and a strong advocate for cooperation between America and Africa.

In a message shared on X on Monday, Nduhungirehe, on behalf of the Government of Rwanda, extended sympathy to Graham’s family and colleagues, noting: “We will remember him as a man of integrity who championed partnerships that advanced mutual interests between Africa and the United States, wildlife protection, and peace in the Great Lakes Region. May he rest in peace.”

Senator Graham, who represented South Carolina, was widely recognized for his influence in U.S. foreign policy and international security. His death was announced on Sunday, July 12, 2026, shortly after returning from a visit to Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Throughout his career, Graham maintained close ties with Rwanda: He held discussions with President Paul Kagame on strengthening cooperation in security, economy, and environmental protection.

In December 2025, he met Kagame in Washington during peace talks related to Rwanda and the DRC. In April 2019, Graham was part of a U.S. Senate delegation hosted by Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame, where they discussed key bilateral issues.

He opposed proposals to impose U.S. sanctions on Rwanda, reinforcing his reputation as a defender of Rwanda–U.S. relations.

Graham’s support highlighted Rwanda’s role as a strategic partner for the United States in East Africa. His advocacy for peace, wildlife conservation, and regional stability aligned with Rwanda’s priorities in the Great Lakes Region.
