Bill Gates honors Paul Farmer at UGHE

During his visit to Rwanda, philanthropist Bill Gates expressed deep admiration for his late friend, Dr. Paul Farmer, founder of the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE).

Gates attended a dialogue at the university, visited Farmer’s grave, and planted a tree in his memory.

Reflecting on their friendship, Gates recalled his first trip to Rwanda with Farmer, where they spent long hours in hospitals discussing tuberculosis, malaria, and strategies to expand healthcare access. He described Farmer as an extraordinary man who dedicated his life to ensuring medical care reached the most vulnerable, earning him the nickname “the good doctor.”

“I want to think about my dear friend, the man who envisioned and built this place, Paul Farmer. It reminded me of my first visit to Rwanda, when I spent time with Paul in hospitals. We talked endlessly about TB, malaria, and how to deliver care to patients everywhere,” Gates said.

UGHE, established by Farmer, continues to embody his vision of equity in healthcare, training future leaders to transform health systems across Africa and beyond. Gates’ tribute underscores the enduring impact of Farmer’s work and Rwanda’s role as a hub for innovative health education.
