Uganda’s former Defense Minister Jacob Marksons Oboth has been elected Speaker of Parliament for the 2026–2031 term, replacing Anita Annet Among, who is under investigation for alleged embezzlement of public funds.
On May 25, 2026, Oboth secured 441 votes, defeating Paul Mwiru (60 votes) and Justice Minister Norbert Mao (15 votes). Immediately after his victory, he was sworn in before President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and handed the official instruments of office, including the national symbols, the Constitution, and the Speaker’s ceremonial attire.
Oboth’s rise began earlier this month when Among was summoned to State House on May 15 and instructed not to contest again. This followed mounting corruption allegations, which led police to raid her Kampala residences and seize six luxury vehicles, including a Rolls‑Royce, Range Rover, Land Cruiser, Mercedes‑Maybach, and Lexus.
On May 16, Uganda’s army commander and Museveni’s son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, hinted on social media that Oboth would replace Among. He also suggested that Thomas Tayebwa, the current Deputy Speaker, could be retained in the new parliamentary leadership.
