The Nyaruguru District administration, together with private investors, has launched major hotel projects to address the long-standing accommodation challenges in Kibeho, Rwanda’s renowned religious tourism hub.

Kibeho attracts millions of visitors annually, especially during key Catholic events such as August 15 (Assumption of the Virgin Mary) and November 28 (Anniversary of the apparitions). Despite this influx, the town has only six lodging facilities with about 200 rooms, forcing many pilgrims to sleep outdoors or in unsuitable places.

District statistics show that 1.2 million visitors come to Nyaruguru each year, with more than half staying overnight in Kibeho. The lack of sufficient accommodation has prompted urgent investment in new hotels and guesthouses.

Regina Pacis Hotel: Expanded from 36 rooms and 68 dormitory beds to include 46 new rooms and dormitories for over 120 guests. It is designed to host large groups, with up to six people sharing a room, making it ideal for missionaries and pilgrim groups.

A diocesan project valued at 2.2 billion Rwandan francs, set to significantly increase capacity.

Nyarushishi Hotel: Another facility under construction to diversify lodging options.

Additional projects include guesthouses by EAR Diocese of Nyaruguru and a hotel planned by community health advisors. Sister Marie Emilienne Umutesi of Regina Pacis explained that expansion was driven by the sight of pilgrims sleeping outside due to lack of rooms. She emphasized that religious tourism is a safe investment: “You cannot say you will lose money in religious tourism, unless Christians are persecuted—and I don’t think that will happen.”

Mayor Dr. Murwanashyaka Emmanuel highlighted that these hotels will provide diverse accommodation options and urged the Private Sector Federation (PSF) to continue investing in tourism infrastructure. The goal is to ensure visitors receive fast, quality services that match the spiritual significance of Kibeho.
