First Ebola treatment center opens in Beni, North Kivu

A new Ebola Treatment Center with 20 beds opens in Beni, North Kivu, strengthening the fight against Ebola with international-standard care and transmission control

The first Ebola Treatment Center (ETC) in the Beni health zone, North Kivu province, was officially handed over to health authorities on July 4, 2026. Built by the International Medical Corps, the facility has a capacity of 20 beds and is equipped to provide care that meets international standards.

The center was received by Jérémie Muhindo Katsavara, medical director of Beni General Referral Hospital. He welcomed the infrastructure as essential in breaking the chain of Ebola transmission and strengthening the province’s response capacity.

This new ETC is the second in North Kivu, following the one in Katwa, Butembo city. Another standardized center is under construction in Beni’s Byautu neighborhood, Beu commune, further expanding the region’s preparedness.

Deaths: 36, Case fatality rate: 54.5%

Distribution: 40 cases in Katwa, 20 in Butembo, 14 in Beni
