On May 23, 2026, reports spread that General Obedi Ngabo, a commander on the Wazalendo side, was killed in fighting near Rubaya’s mining zones in Masisi, North Kivu.
Manzi Willy, one of the leaders of AFC/M23, celebrated the news, saying: “Today the world is better without those called Gen. Obed. He joins Ruhinda, Mudacumura, Cirimwami, and others…”
Congolese journalist Steve Wembi, who closely follows events in eastern DRC, also reported that multiple sources confirmed Ngabo’s death during clashes on Friday. Ngabo was known as a member of the Coalition for Democracy (CLD).
The fighting around Rubaya highlights the intensity of battles in Masisi, where control of mining areas is strategic. Drone warfare and heavy clashes continue to escalate tensions between government forces, Wazalendo, and M23.
