On May 25, 2026, Rwandan soldiers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were awarded UN medals of honor in recognition of their professionalism, sacrifice, and contribution to peacekeeping.
The ceremony took place at the UN compound in Malakal, Upper Nile State, where the contingent RWANBATT‑2 was praised for its exceptional role in protecting civilians and supporting humanitarian operations in one of South Sudan’s most volatile regions.
UNMISS Force Commander Maj Gen Junhui Wu highlighted the Rwandan troops’ discipline, resilience, and teamwork: “The medals you received today reflect the trust placed in you by the United Nations and the international community. They symbolize your courage, patience, and professionalism in challenging conditions.”
He noted their success in maintaining security, safeguarding civilians, and enabling aid delivery.
Colonel Emmanuel Kanobayire, head of Rwanda’s forces in South Sudan, emphasized that the medals represent not just mission completion but also the values of sacrifice, commitment, and dedication to peace.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by the contingent but affirmed their determination to uphold Rwanda’s principles of peacekeeping on the global stage.
The event was attended by senior UNMISS officials and representatives of other troop‑contributing countries, underscoring Rwanda’s respected role in international peacekeeping efforts.
