On May 25, 2026, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni refused to shake hands during the opening session of Parliament in Kololo, citing the risk of Ebola transmission.

Museveni expressed concern after observing MPs and guests embracing and greeting each other warmly despite the outbreak. He asked: “Why are you hugging? I see you shaking hands… do you know there is Ebola? I will not touch any of you. Ebola does not spread through air but through contact — handshakes and hugs. Why hug? Set an example until Ebola is defeated.”

On May 15, 2026, Ebola was confirmed in Bunia, Ituri Province (DRC) after a patient died.

By May 22, WHO reported 750 suspected cases and 177 deaths in DRC.

Uganda confirmed 7 cases by May 25, including 2 new infections announced by the Ministry of Health.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals, contaminated surfaces, or animals. It does not spread through the air. Preventive measures include avoiding physical contact, practicing hand hygiene, and isolating suspected cases.

Museveni’s remarks highlight the importance of public health discipline in curbing the outbreak, especially in high‑profile gatherings.
