The City of Kigali has announced new measures to strengthen public transport, focusing on expanding bus routes and introducing larger buses to meet rising demand.
Since April 2026, bus ridership has increased by 15%, according to city spokesperson Ntirenganya Emma Claudine. She explained that this growth is linked to improvements such as dedicated bus lanes and campaigns encouraging public transport use, especially as fuel prices continue to rise.
Some routes previously served only by smaller Coaster buses will now also feature larger buses to accommodate more passengers. Coasters will continue operating alongside them.
Key routes identified for expansion include: Remera–Mulindi–Gasogi, RP Nyamirambo–Miduha–Mageragere
Additionally, buses will run through industrial zones during peak hours to serve workers, with some vehicles operating there throughout the day. A pilot route is also underway for passengers traveling to and from Kigali International Airport in Kanombe.
Ntirenganya noted that services are now more efficient, with passengers spending less time waiting at bus stops and stations. This has made daily commutes faster and more reliable.
Despite progress, challenges remain. Some motorcycle taxis and private cars continue to use bus‑only lanes outside permitted hours, disrupting traffic flow. Authorities plan stricter enforcement in collaboration with the police to ensure buses can operate smoothly.
