On Monday, the spokesperson of AFC/M23, Lawrence Kanyuka, issued a statement warning that any new offensives by government forces (FARDC) will be met with counter‑attacks pushing them back beyond their starting positions.

Kanyuka explained that the month of May 2026 was marked by intensified ground and aerial assaults from Kinshasa’s forces in areas controlled by M23. He accused the government of deploying heavy weapons, drones, and reinforcements along the frontlines in preparation for fresh attacks, which he claimed were targeting both civilian areas and rebel positions.

He stressed that M23’s response will not be limited to defending its current territory but will involve driving FARDC forces back beyond their launch points. This signals a potential escalation if new offensives are carried out.

Since early 2025, M23 has not expanded its territory. Under pressure from mediators, the group withdrew from several areas in South Kivu, including Uvira city and parts of Walungu. However, its ally Twirwaneho continues to control Minembwe in Fizi territory, which has become a hotspot for drone strikes by government forces.

Despite ongoing peace talks and repeated calls for ceasefires, sporadic clashes continue in eastern DRC. The situation remains fragile, with civilians caught between the warring sides and mistrust undermining mediation efforts.
