Rwanda’s development story is increasingly visible in its road infrastructure, which has grown nearly fourfold in the past ten years. Improved roads are not only transforming mobility but also boosting trade, agriculture, and access to essential services.

Recent asphalt roads include: Base–Rukomo–Nyagatare – 124.3 km, Huye–Kitabi – 53 km, Ngoma–Ramiro – 53 km, Bugesera–Nyanza easing traffic flow to the South. These projects have transformed areas once plagued by dust, mud, and poor access—such as Kibeho, now attracting hotels and pilgrims thanks to better roads.

In 2017, Rwanda had 1,305 km of asphalt roads. By mid‑2026, this figure surpassed 4,000 km, according to RTDA Director General Imena Munyampenda. The country also maintains over 18,000 km of dirt roads.

Government’s five‑year plan (2025–2030) aims to: Build/rehabilitate 300 km of national roads. Construct 500 km of feeder roads to connect farmers and traders to markets

RTDA reported needing over 120 billion RWF in the 2024/25 fiscal year for road maintenance, but received less than that, highlighting ongoing budgetary constraints.
