South Sudanese student faces trial in Kigali

On July 16, 2026, the Kicukiro Primary Court heard the case of Viola Eli Bibi Albert, a South Sudanese student accused of assaulting his lecturer and threatening to kill him. Prosecutors requested a three‑year prison sentence and compensation of 9 million RWF.

The incident dates back to June 4, 2026, when Eli Bibi, a fourth‑year student nearing graduation, confronted his lecturer after failing exams. He had scored 23/60 and asked for seven extra points to pass, but the lecturer refused. Later, he failed another exam with 0/40, which escalated tensions. Witnesses reported that Eli Bibi slapped, strangled, and injured the lecturer, while vowing to kill him. He was arrested and detained at RIB Gikondo station.

During the trial, Eli Bibi admitted to the assault and apologized, claiming anger and frustration drove his actions. However, he denied making death threats. Prosecutors argued that evidence proved intimidation and requested one year for assault, two years for threats, plus a fine of 500,000 RWF.

The lecturer’s lawyer, Me Mutangana Félix, demanded 9.21 million RWF in damages. This included 5 million for public humiliation, 1 million for medical and psychological support, 1.2 million for a damaged phone, 2 million for legal fees, and other case‑related expenses. The defense argued the damages were excessive and asked for reduction.

The lecturer rejected reconciliation, noting that no apology had been offered earlier and pointing out that Eli Bibi had also filed a counter‑complaint against him, which undermined his sincerity.

The verdict is scheduled for July 31, 2026, at 3:00 PM, with Eli Bibi remaining in custody until then.
