Uganda court postpones Besigye trial after collapse

Uganda’s High Court in Kampala has postponed the trial of opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye after he collapsed during proceedings on July 29, 2026.

The 70‑year‑old, facing charges of treason and plotting to overthrow the government, lost consciousness while protesting that his case was being heard without the defense lawyers of his choice. He was rushed to Mulago Hospital and admitted to the ICU.

His wife, Winnie Byanyima, expressed concern over his condition, insisting he should be treated in a private hospital under his personal doctor rather than in a state facility. She said the family does not trust the care he will receive at Mulago.

Judge Emmanuel Baguma ordered Uganda’s prison authorities to provide a detailed medical report before the next hearing scheduled for August 4, 2026. He also instructed state‑appointed lawyers to prepare to represent Besigye, despite his objections that he had not had enough time to consult them.

Besigye’s collapse came shortly after heated exchanges in court, where he requested a one‑week adjournment to prepare his defense. The prosecution had just begun presenting its first witness when the incident halted proceedings.

Besigye has been in detention since November 2024, after being arrested in Kenya and extradited to Uganda. His trial has drawn significant attention as one of the most high‑profile opposition cases in recent years.
