On June 8, 2026, Rwanda’s Cabinet approved the creation of a National Artificial Intelligence Agency to oversee the development and application of AI technologies nationwide. This new institution will coordinate all AI‑related initiatives, ensuring that innovation, research, and investment are streamlined under one umbrella.

The agency’s mandate includes supervising AI implementation in Rwanda and abroad, transforming public sector operations through AI, conducting research, expanding knowledge, upholding ethical principles, promoting industry growth, and strengthening international cooperation. By centralizing these efforts, Rwanda aims to nurture talent, attract investment, and drive digital transformation across the continent.

AI is already being applied in Rwanda’s healthcare, education, justice, agriculture, and business sectors, making it a cornerstone of national development.

This move builds on Rwanda’s National Artificial Intelligence Policy, adopted in April 2023, which set the vision of positioning the country as a continental hub for AI research and innovation, improving government services, and ensuring responsible use of AI in the private sector.

Rwanda is signaling its ambition to become a leader in AI innovation in Africa, with a clear focus on resilience, talent development, and global partnerships.
