Two twin sons of Vianney Kazarama, who had been detained by AFC/M23’s military intelligence, have reportedly been released, according to sources cited by BWIZA.
The twins were accused of “possessing firearms and passing information to Kigali.” Their detention was linked to alleged abuses by the head of AFC/M23’s military intelligence, accused of arbitrary arrests, torture, and disrespect for commanders.
One of the twins was reportedly beaten severely, losing all his teeth and later developing oral cancer after metal implants were placed in his mouth.
Some commanders within AFC/M23 expressed disapproval of the way the twins were treated.
The case was reportedly brought to Gen. Sultani Makenga, who acknowledged they were being punished unjustly.
Their arrest stemmed from footage showing one of them firing a gun during a New Year’s celebration alongside a Major in Makenga’s security detail.
Relatives of Kazarama have been traumatized, with some seeking to leave DRC for safety.
Sources say: “The Kazarama family doesn’t need this anymore. Many are suffering trauma, some are trying to flee to Europe, and some have already left, unwilling to return.”
AFC/M23 leadership has not responded to media inquiries about the case.
Kazarama himself declined to comment, saying he is focused on campaigns encouraging Rwandan fighters in Congo’s forests to return home.
These campaigns have reportedly led to the repatriation of over 500 individuals.
