On 28 May 2026, the political leadership of AFC/M23 announced the dismissal of Muhindo Mughanda, rector of the University of Goma, citing prolonged absenteeism.
Mughanda reportedly left his post and traveled to an area under Kinshasa’s control, raising concerns among M23 authorities. AFC/M23 declared that his absence undermined the functioning of the university and justified his removal.
The University of Goma is a major academic institution in North Kivu, located in a region currently contested between Kinshasa’s government and M23 rebels.
Control over education and public institutions has become part of the broader struggle for legitimacy and governance in eastern Congo.
