On May 28, 2026, in Goma, AFC/M23 political coordinator Corneille Nangaa Yobeluo and his deputy Bertrand Bisimwa met with representatives of churches and religious organizations from North and South Kivu to discuss strategies against the Ebola outbreak.

Nangaa emphasized that Ebola prevention is not only the responsibility of doctors but of every citizen, family, and community leader.

He reminded participants “Ebola kills, but Ebola can be prevented and defeated by respecting preventive measures.”

Preventive actions highlighted: Handwashing, Social distancing and strengthening community vigilance

Nangaa warned against exploiting Ebola for personal gain “Do not treat Ebola as an opportunity for jobs or profit. This fight must be about protecting people.”

AFC/M23 announced the creation of a specialist task force to coordinate Ebola response in areas under its control.

Religious leaders were praised for their historical role in fostering social cohesion and were urged to mobilize communities in awareness campaigns.

Nangaa recalled that since Ebola was first identified in 1976, individual behavior has been the most powerful weapon against its spread.

He added “Fighting Ebola begins with each person. Wash your hands often. Protect your life and protect others.”
