“Your responsibilities have grown so will the consequences of your decisions.” Kagame to RDF graduates

At the Senior Command and Staff College in Nyakinama, President Paul Kagame addressed graduating officers, reminding them that their training had elevated them to a higher level of responsibility. He emphasized that with expanded knowledge and sharpened skills, the weight of their decisions and the consequences would also increase.

Kagame expressed gratitude to the families and friends who supported the officers throughout their studies, acknowledging the sacrifices made in the demanding life of military service. He also thanked partner countries whose officers joined the program, noting that shared training builds values that strengthen regional military cooperation.

He highlighted key values that must guide their leadership. First is resilience, the ability to endure challenges and make decisions even in difficult circumstances. Second is critical thinking, ensuring that every action is carefully considered, since the impact of their choices will grow with their rank. Third is humility, recognizing that good decisions come from experience, collaboration, and learning from past mistakes.

Finally, Kagame stressed purposedriven leadership, urging officers to always know what they are fighting for. For the RDF, that purpose is rooted in protecting Rwanda’s citizens and sovereignty.

He told the graduates that the question is not whether they will lead, but how they will lead. RDF’s current strength, he said, is no accident it is the result of years of sacrifice, discipline, and professionalism. Kagame concluded by reminding them that Rwanda’s credibility with citizens, partners, and allies comes from this discipline, and that as technology evolves, new challenges will demand constant renewal of values and skills.
